🌱 Top 5 packaging tips for your Microgreens biz

I’m excited to share some of my top tips when it comes to packaging your microgreens.  Packaging is super important because it provides your potential customer with a first impression of your product.  Optimal packaging will also help ensure your microgreens have the longest shelf life possible.

Clamshells are the gold standard for most microgreens farmers.  Yes, there are other options, like bags, but in my experience produce bags do not offer the same shelf life as clamshells.

Let’s dive into the tips:

Tip 1: Opt for Eco-Friendly Packaging

I know that sustainability is near and dear to your heart. Consider what packaging is most environmentally friendly for you.  Choosing a  biodegradable or compostable container may be a great option if you live in an area where industrial composting is an option.

If your area does not yet have industrial composting facilities, you might choose recyclable clam shells.  You may even be able to source containers made of recycled plastic.

Another option is to look into the possibility of reusable containers.  Depending on where you live, who you sell to, and the resources available to you… this might be a super eco-friendly option.

Tip 2: Ensure Air-Tight Sealing

Freshness is key! Use air-tight packaging to retain the crispness and flavor of your greens.  One common objection held by potential customers is that microgreens “go bad” too quickly.  It’s our job as microgreens farmers to ensure our microgreens have as long a shelf life as possible.  Make sure there is very little negative space in your filled packages.  (Remember your microgreens need to be dry before packaging).

Tip 3: Choose recessed lids rather than domed lids

Make sure lids are recessed, so they stack easily.  Flat lids, or even worse domed lids, make stacking your containers a nightmare for you on delivery day.

(Whether lids are attached or unattached does not matter too much.)

Tip 4:  Choose 2-3 sizes that work best for you and your customer

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by ALL the options when it comes to packaging.  I highly recommend you choose 2 to 3 package sizes, max.  This helps simplify your offers for your customers (which helps you make more sales).  Having just a few sizes also helps you in managing your packaging inventory.

Tip 5: Use clear, branded labels

Let your packaging grab your potential customer’s attention. Use labels that clearly identify what’s inside.  Also, be sure to include your business name and logo.  Use branding that is consistent with your business, this builds trust and brand recognition.

You can design your brand on Canva yourself or hire someone to design it for you.
